About the Sevier Amateur Radio Club
History has shown that once a few Amateur Radio Operators meet and begin discussing things they can do to make Ham Radio and their community better, good things begin to happen. Well, Scott and Shalice Brady and Steve Fehlhaber had the opportunity to put a few plans together early in 2009, and it seems that some hard work was rewarded. By forming a W5YI Testing team, they were able to begin testing in April of 2009 with the successful passing of two new licensees and two upgrades.
By October of 2009, they were able to schedule an Amateur Class aimed at getting new folks trained to take the Tech test. After these classes, 20 new licensees passed the Tech test to join the ranks of active Hams in Sevier Valley. Although there had been a couple of impromptu gatherings at Bully's (the local fast food place) for some of our local Amateurs in the Summer, our first meeting in November 2009 after licenses had been issued to our first class of students was a real catalyst. Invitations were sent to over 100 active licensed operators residing in Sevier County and the attendance by so many interested Radio enthusiasts was nice to see.
After that successful gathering, Scott and Steve began putting together ideas for this web site and what it's content might include. We maintain active ham club meetings, trainings, and testing sessions. In the past, ham radio enthusiasts would have to travel several hours to receive training and testing, but now, we have a fully functional club and W5YI-authorized testing services available. We also have an active Facebook presence.
Although we do not have our own repeater systems that we operate, we are closely partnered with the Skyline Radio Club in Sanpete County (to the North) who have fully-functional repeater systems and links that cover most of South Central Utah.
We also operate an IRLP/Echolink node (node#3771) which is located on top of the Sevier County EMS Building in Monroe, Utah. The other two "local" repeaters for our area are: 1) our Net repeater on Monroe Peak, 146.640/pl 100hz (owned by Sevier County and administered by Jeff Nielson-W7JVN) and 2) K1ENT's repeater 146.840/pl 100, IRLP #7475 on Signal Peak.
In January of 2016, our local group organized for the first time as an official club with a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. We are now fully organized with over 80 members, with several annual events including open shacks, club parties, at least one technician training class, and several testing sessions throughout the year. We continue to strive to improve and train our members so in the event of a real emergency, we will be ready to provide emergency communications when needed. We invite all interested to get their license and participate with us.
